In its inaugural year, the MacJannet Prize generated an enormous amount of interest. It was a pleasure for us to review all of the nominations and learn about the exciting, innovative work that is happening in Talloires Network member institutions around the world. The number and quality of nominations demonstrated that the civic engagement movement within higher education is very strong and truly global. Programs from 19 different countries were nominated. All of them provide excellent models, even as each of them operates in a specific context and addresses particular community needs. We hope to share the good practices employed by all of these programs, and we especially want to draw attention to the eight programs that received the Prize this year. In the coming months, we will be adding to the MacJannet Prize website additional information on the finalists and winning programs, including videos. I am sure you will enjoy learning more about these programs that embody the civic engagement work that the Talloires Network promotes. Announcements First MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship honors eight civic engagement programs The Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation announced the winners of the first annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship last month. The winning programs, based at Talloires Network member institutions in four continents, have demonstrated tangible and sustainable impact in their respective communities. They address a variety of social issues, including public health, education, socio-economic development, and human rights. More information about the winning programs and all finalists will be added to the MacJannet Prize website. Student Peer Advisor program This new student-focused initiative aims to form a peer community of young people interested in community outreach and engagement. Selected advisors will share their advice and expertise during monthly chats on our discussion forum. Suggest a topic for our first online chat by e-mailing ayers@icicp.org. Talloires Network News Talloires Network institutions enroll over 2.5 million students! The 96 institutions that currently make up the Talloires Network enroll approximately 2.8 million students, a finding that reveals the enormous potential that students have to contribute to their campuses and communities—and the important role they already play. This constituency represents a tremendous reservoir of talent able to address pressing social problems, ranging from public health to environmental issues. See a list of our member institutions>> Ahfad University Program Highlighted in VOSESA Bulletin Volunteer and Service Enquiry Southern Africa (VOSESA) included an article about Ahfad University’s civic engagement program to combat female genital mutilation (FGM). The article applauds the program for the "holistic approach it took to reaching the community" and for its inclusion of volunteers from the community. Read the full article on our blog>> Featured Program MacJannet Prize first-place winner: Urban Health Program at Aga Khan University This innovative and long-standing program run by Aga Khan University’s Department of Community Health Sciences provides critical health and socio-economic support to the squatter settlements of Karachi. In an interview with Talloires Network staff, Dr. Muhammad Yousuf, Principal Coordinator of the program, discusses what makes this program unique, the role of students in the project, and best practices they have identified for other public health programs. Read the full interview>> Featured Interview “The Scholarship of Partnerships”: an interview with Kevin Kecskes, Associate Vice Provost for Engagement and the Director for Community-University Partnerships at Portland State University On May 18-19, PSU will host the International Partnership Institute, organized around the theme of "Reciprocal Partnerships: Transforming Higher Education and Community for the Future." We spoke with him recently about the background and goals of the Institute, the importance of partnerships, and what institutions around the world can do to strengthen their partnerships. An excerpt from the interview: "I would hope that what the Institute will spawn is recognition of, first and foremost, the foundational importance of community-higher education partnerships in every aspect of the university…. [The Institute] is ultimately about the continued transformation of higher education in a new global century." Read the full interview on our website>> Higher Education News "Twenty Partnerships Awarded USAID-Funded Grants in Africa-U.S. Higher Education Initiative Grant Competition" Talloires Network member Tufts University was one of forty institutions that received a grant to develop a capacity-building partnership with another university. Tufts will pair with Muhimibili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania. Paired winners receive grants of $50,000 each to "develop plans to address regional and national economic development priorities such as engineering, health, agriculture, environment and natural resources, science and technology, education and teacher training/preparation, and business, management and economics." Read more>> Higher Education’s economic contribution A report commissioned by Universities Australia finds that the return on investment in higher education is immense, at a 14-15% real rate of return. The gains result from graduates’ productivity and "enhanced research and innovation" from universities. The study focuses on the Australian context, but its findings are applicable elsewhere. Read more (PDF)>> Opportunities LEADHER Program The Leadership for Higher Education Reform (LEADHER) Programme connects professionals in higher education institutions working to improve the match between societal demands and what higher education institutions offer. Winning institutions will receive a grant and opportunities for international collaboration. The deadline for the Spring 2009 competition is May 15. Learn more>> Papers and Publications “Too much of a good thing? Re-focusing the benefits of community-engaged learning” This article from the HR Council for the Voluntary & Non-profit Sector examines both the benefits and pitfalls of the increasingly popular community-engaged learning (CEL) approach. The author, Wendy MacDonald, Curriculum Coordinator of the Executive Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector program at Grant MacEwan College in Canada, also provides recommendations for higher education institutions to improve the CEL experience. Read the complete article>> “Contributions from Higher Education to a society recovering from conflict” Juliet Millican, Development Manager of Student Learning in the Community at the University of Brighton (UK) and one of our civic engagement experts, examines the role that higher education institutions can play in fostering civic responsibility within societies recovering from conflict. Dr. Millican recommends implementing student community engagement programs, which contributes to student development while strengthening civil society. Read the article>> The Journal of Nonprofit & Public Sector Marketing (JNPSM): Special issue on Civic Participation and Service Learning JNPSM is a peer review journal devoted to the study of the adaptation of traditional marketing principles for use by nonprofit organizations and government agencies. The Journal has issued a call for articles for an upcoming special issue on civic participation and service learning. Empirical, conceptual, and literature review articles are welcome. The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2009. Instructions for potential authors can be found here>> Upcoming Events International Partnership Institute: "Reciprocal Partnerships: Transforming Higher Education and Community for the Future." Portland, Oregon. May 18-19, 2009 Join community and campus practitioners and scholars to deeply explore engaged teaching, research and service partnerships – their proven mechanisms and strategies for success, persistent challenges, and the scholarship of partnerships. This institute is co-sponsored by the Talloires Network. Learn more>> Campus Engage conference: “Higher Education and Civic Engagement Partnerships: Create, Challenge, Change.” Dublin, Ireland. June 4-5, 2009 This will be the first annual international conference sponsored by Campus Engage, a network for the promotion of civic engagement in Irish higher education. The conference will provide participants from community and higher education with an opportunity to discuss the potential for change offered by civic engagement partnerships in areas such as service-learning / community-based learning, research, civic education and volunteering. The Talloires Network is a co-sponsor of the conference. Learn more>> "Excellence in Engagement: Policies and Practices for University Engagement with Excluded Communities" Symposium. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. June 22, 2009 This one-day symposium is being organized by the Centre for Knowledge, Innovation, Technology and Enterprise at Newcastle University in the UK. The goal of the event is to move beyond a limited vision of engagement to sketch out a theoretically-informed practical policy agenda for a broad version of university-community engagement. Speakers will address the practicalities of encouraging engagement with excluded and marginalised groups both within HEIs and for policy-makers. Confirmed speakers for the event include Talloires Network civic engagement expert Angie Hart (Brighton University, Director, Community-University Partnerships Programme). Learn more>> Expanding Civic Engagement in Arab Universities: A Peer Learning Workshop for Faculty. American University of Beirut, Lebanon. June 23-26, 2009 Sponsored by the Ma’an Arab University Alliance for Civic Engagement, this workshop is open to faculty and staff members from Arab universities. Topics to be addressed include the basics of civic engagement, the basics of community-based learning, community-based research and scholarship, and building & strengthening community partnerships. For more information and to register, visit the website>> Resource of the Month The Horizon Report This report, produced by the New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, analyzes the impact of new technologies in the field of higher education. Highlighted technologies include mobiles, cloud computing, and the personal web. The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya has translated the Horizon Report into Catalan and Spanish, and it is also available in Japanese. Learn more>>
