Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow

President Bacow.JPGThis past month offered Talloires Network members several opportunities to connect with one another, both in person and online. The presentation of the new MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, held in Talloires, France at the Tufts European Center, brought together representatives of the winning programs, staff members from the Talloires Network, and members of the MacJannet Foundation Board for a beautiful ceremony and a series of practical workshops. Participants enjoyed meeting one another, and they walked away with new resources and ideas for further development of their civic engagement projects.

Two weeks later, the Talloires Network hosted another meeting—this one virtual—marking the launch of the Talloires 24 Student Discussion Series. Students from 17 countries visited the forum to discuss what civic engagement means, and to advise one another on the first steps to take when initiating a civic engagement project. This virtual meeting served as another effective way of sharing information, forming connections, and raising awareness of the innovative civic engagement programs in place at Talloires Network institutions around the world. We hope you’ll join us at our next event in Buenos Aires, or online, to share your expertise and take advantage of our dynamic network.

Featured Interview

Duncan2.JPGDuncan Clough was named a Talloires Network Student Peer Advisor for his demonstrated commitment to civic engagement work with TeachOut at the University of Cape Town. An entirely student-run organization, TeachOut provides tutoring in Math, English, Science and Accounting to approximately 250 learners at disadvantaged schools. Duncan recently participated in the first Talloires 24 Student Discussion, and we spoke with him about the importance of civic engagement, the role of students in initiating outreach work, and advice for his peers.

Excerpt: "While at university, people are likely to have more independence, flexibility and available time than in any other stage of their lives. It is the perfect time to engage with the community. Community involvement provides students with valuable life experiences and often exposes them to the lives of those less fortunate than themselves. This exposure helps foster a sense of social responsibility which hopefully remains with them for the rest of their lives." Read the full interview>>
