Civic engagement activities are quickly becoming a staple of the student experience in Pakistani universities. With the recent creation of a Pakistan Chapter of the Talloires Network (PCTN), civic engagement professionals count on the support of their peers. Just last month, PCTN published their first-ever bi-annual newsletter, highlight social responsibility programs throughout the country.

One such program recently had a powerful day of activities geared toward young children who might one day be enrolled as university students. The Institute of Space Technology (IST), in Islamabad, recently opened its gates to celebrate a School Children’s Day with students from the schools of Mohara Darogha and Java.

Team Umeed, a community service student society at IST, arranged ‘A Day with School Children’ at campus. The purpose of celebrating such a day was to conduct an informative, entertaining and confidence building show for children from rural area schools of country. Team “Umeed”  made special arrangements to make them feel that the day was all theirs’. The campus was decorated to please guests of the day. About hundred kids participated. Some kids were excited, some were amazed, but their jubilance could be clearly seen.

The event kicked off at 10 with a campus tour, with a group photo of team Umeed and little angels with Mushak. Then they were led to auditorium for indoor activities and fun. A small drama was staged for the entertainment of these young minds by the performing arts society of IST by the name AOUJ. Then they were let free to the grounds, to play and enjoy. Team members also played games like tug of war and spoon shoot with them. A drawing competition was held and children drew random colorful drawings. By noon they were all tired, and they gathered for refreshment in the IST mess. Finally, it was time, time for them to go home and to say goodbye. They left the premises of university in protection of their teachers and IST transport around 1 PM. Team umeed greatly appreciates the efforts of the IST transportation department and student affairs department for being a helping hand always, without them the successful completion of such events would not be possible. They left with the same glory they entered, leaving behind exciting cheers, loud laughter and charming childhood behind.
