New Accomplishments and Future Connections

Tony MonacoDear colleagues,

The month of May marks the end of another academic year here at Tufts University, and in many of our member universities around the world. This is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of dedicated students, faculty, staff, and community partners working together to effect positive change.

In this month’s newsletter, we honor the work of the newest cohort of MacJannet Prize winners. The National University of Sciences and Technology (Pakistan), University of Technology Sydney (Australia), and Ahfad University for Women (Sudan) are all demonstrating exemplary work that impacts the communities around them. In total, 48 universities in 17 countries submitted nominations, bringing a tough decision to the selection committee and demonstrating that university civic engagement is indeed a global movement.

With a look towards the future, we invite member universities to submit their expressions of interest to host the next Talloires Network Leaders Conference in 2017. This will be an exciting time to build on the ideas and actions we discussed together last December in South Africa.

You are also invited to join TN Connects, an online community of practice facilitated by the TN Secretariat. Over the next few months, this platform will become a center for discussion on topics of interest to civic engagement practitioners and scholars.

Best regards,

Tony Monaco

Talloires Network Programs and Announcements

Tony Monaco

Congratulations to the winners of the 2015 MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. Many community-engaged projects deserve recognition, but the selection committee can only choose three winners each year. The top awardee this year is the NCSC Education for Empowerment program in Pakistan’s National University of Sciences and Technology. This program mobilizes more than 6,000 students to build and maintain community projects related to tutoring, parent counseling, and skill development. The second prize went to the UTS Shopfront Community program at the University of Technology, Sydney (Australia), to support their work around engaged learning, advocacy, and social justice. Finally, the Ahfad University for Women won third prize for their I-DEAL Sudan project, which provides psycho-social support for vulnerable children impacted by war, displacement, or poverty.
