An international group of higher education leaders convened November 4 – 6, 2016 in Beijing, for the Third University Social Responsibility Summit. Organized by TN partner the University Social Responsibility Network, this dynamic gathering demonstrated the impressive and growing Asian leadership in the expanding global movement beyond the ivory tower.
Presented as part of the prestigious Beijing Forum, the USR Summit was attended by over 200 presidents, senior administrators, professors and students from 52 institutions, including 36 Chinese universities, in 12 countries.
TN Founding Executive Director Emeritus Rob Hollister spoke at two conference sessions, including one that he chaired on developing student leaders.
Tisch Scholar Michael Wang served as Tufts student representative. He participated in the separate student forum as well as the regular conference. Michael was selected by his peers to present highlights of the student forum at the concluding plenary session of the conference.
Michael comments, “The University Social Responsibility summit really exposed me to the diverse approaches to active citizenship, ranging from app development to grassroots organizing to natural disaster education. Engaging with students from all over the world, I found the commitment to both local and global issues inspiring. Moving forward, the USR students plan to hold a second forum in June, and I am hoping to extend this opportunity to a larger group of Tufts undergraduates.”
