Kenyatta University is situated about 23 kilometres from the city of Nairobi. The origins of the university date to 1965, and full university status was granted in 1985. Community Outreach and Extension Programmes (COEP)
The mission of COEP is to reach out to communities and extend knowledge, skills, information and other resources that help the communities to identify, mobilize and utilize their locally available resources to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and the society at large. Several community–based projects from academic departments and students clubs have been funded and are currently being implemented.
Sample projects include:
- Clean-up of the Nairobi River
- Cleaning of Thika District Hospital
- Work to help conserve the wetlands at Ruiru Country Club
- Training for underprivileged youth in tailoring, dressmaking and knitting to help them earn a living
