Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow The growing global movement for engaged universities has a vital role to play in maximizing the benefits of higher education for individuals and societies. Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel has observed that while talent and ability are distributed evenly throughout the world, opportunity is not. University civic engagement is a powerful tool to correct this injustice by expanding access and opportunities for people around the world and from all backgrounds. I am proud of the Talloires Network’s efforts on behalf of this vision. Our own recent meeting of Talloires Network leaders and partners in Bellagio, as well as the Universia conference in Guadalajara, were both reminders of the importance of building strong personal relationships and strengthening networks through face-to-face interaction. I am therefore pleased to let you know that we are preparing to hold a global conference of Talloires Network members in Madrid during the first half of 2011. As the first global meeting of Talloires Network leaders since the Network was launched in 2005, this will be a tremendous opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas, discuss the future of the Network, and build relationships among the membership. I look forward to providing you with more details in the near future. I recently had the opportunity to attend the 
University of Richmond commencement speaker Arne Duncan, the U.S. Secretary of Education, extolled the benefits of making a difference through community service. He praised the university’s commitment to serving the community through the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement. The University of Richmond joined the Talloires Network in May 2009.
Launched in April by the Latin American Center for Service-Learning (CLAYSS), this program promotes social engagement and service-learning practices, and intends to help students in the region be players and leaders in their own community, using knowledge in the service of local development. The program includes an 18-month program of in-person and distance teacher training, scholarships for participation in the 13th International Seminar on service-learning (to be held in Buenos Aires on 26-27 August 2010), and technical support for the institutionalization of programs. Thanks to the support received from private donors, CLAYSS can offer this program with a 50% reduction in costs to the member institutions of the Talloires Network and the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network. Requests to enroll in the program can be submitted by a single institution, or you can consider a joint application between several universities in the same city. Learn more at 
The Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy provides a platform for developing new ideas and solutions to some of the most difficult global problems. Residencies – typically one-month stays – allow for disciplined work and collaborative action on these issues, uninterrupted by the usual professional and personal demands. Bellagio residents include scholars, scientists, artists, journalists, writers, non-governmental organization practitioners and policymakers from around the world. The Bellagio Center is especially interested in applicants from around the globe who are working in fields that are consistent with the Rockefeller Foundation’s issue areas. 
Jonathan Tisch, CEO of Loews Hotels and supporter of numerous civic engagement programs and institutions, including the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University, has devoted a lifetime to “active citizenship.” It’s an idea that uses the power of practical creativity and grassroots participation to solve seemingly intractable problems. In Citizen You – released on May 4 – Tisch challenges readers to join this movement and points the way toward making our world a better place, one person and one neighborhood at a time. 
The AUCEA 2010 Conference will address key challenges faced by universities in increasing community participation and addressing social equity. This is a different focus from previous conferences and is a must attend event for committed higher educators and their community partners. Keynote speakers include: Prof. Sarena Seifer, Founding Executive Director of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH); Senator Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion; and Prof. Scott Bowman, Vice Chancellor of Central Queensland University. 
The 2010 World Congress will be hosted by ALARA, the Action Learning, Action Research Association, a strategic network of people interested in using action research and action learning to generate collaborative learning, research and action to transform workplaces, schools, colleges, universities, communities, voluntary organisations, governments and businesses. 
The International Association of National Youth Service (IANYS) is hosting its 9th Global Conference in Alexandria, Egypt. This is an exciting opportunity for professionals in the field of youth development to come together to share information and current developments in the field with other policymakers, practitioners, and researchers; nurture connections for developing future projects; and discuss the emerging impact of service in the context of youth employability and youth service policy among other important themes. Conference participants will include professionals in the field of youth civic engagement from across the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region and around the world. 
CAIRDE is a program developed for Mechanical and Biomedical Engineers students attending the National University of Ireland in Galway. CAIRDE introduces a new approach to Irish engineering education—experiential learning—which takes university students out of the classroom to show them what kind of impact their knowledge can have on improving their surrounding communities. The program gives students an opportunity to take on leadership roles as well as interact with communities in need. In doing so, CAIRDE provides its students with a new way of viewing their role in society and how the knowledge they gain in the classroom can be applied to the wider community.
