Once known as the Instituto Pedagógico – a school that was part of the Universidad de Chile – the Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación (UMCE) itself was established in 1981. The university was created to provide programs of study that trained educators of the future. UMCE is now Chile’s leading institution of higher education focusing on applied pedagogical and teaching research.
