Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow Over the past several months, I have been closely following the events unfolding in the Middle East and North Africa, and I have been inspired by the growing movement for more representative and responsive government in the region. Many challenges remain and the future is uncertain, but I am optimistic that the energy and passion for change in the region, especially among young people, will be transformative. I am also confident that higher education will continue to play a major role in this time of political and social transformation. Barbara Ibrahim, Director of the Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at the American University in Cairo, shares her thoughts on the role of universities in this month’s guest article below. The Talloires Network has recently made two exciting announcements. First, the 2011 MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship has been awarded to eight outstanding programs from around the world. Representatives of these winning programs will join us at the Talloires Network Global Leaders Conference in Madrid this June to receive the Prize, exchange ideas with one another, and share their experiences with the entire conference. I look forward to meeting all of the program representatives in Madrid. Read below for more information on the winning programs. Second, we have launched a new website for the Madrid conference, talloires2011.org, which provides information on travel and accommodations, the program, and the Talloires Network more broadly. Confirmed participants are invited to create a profile where you will upload a photo, provide information on your university, and share your commitment to community engagement. In addition to being a source of information on the conference, the website will provide space for participants to network with one another before and after the conference, strengthening the peer relationships that are so essential to the success of the Talloires Network. The winning programs were selected from a pool of 75 nominations from 59 universities in 26 countries. In addition to monetary awards and recognition on our website and communications, each program will send two representatives to the Talloires Network Leaders Conference in Madrid in June to engage in workshops, share their ideas and experience, and receive the Prize in an award ceremony. Learn more about these programs on the conference website>> The Role of Arab Universities in Democratic Transitions "Virtually no one predicted the timing or composition of that uprising which toppled a 30-year-old regime. However, had one been closely observing university campuses across the region, a number of indications were present that foreshadowed the events of the past three months. From a vantage point in Cairo, I could see the ways in which universities were serving as ‘incubators’ for youthful activism. Campuses were ideal places to meet like-minded fellow students, become internet savvy, observe the stifling effects of repression, and debate national concerns. One can argue that what was happening over the past decade in Egyptian universities was the creation of a generation of youth who were not simply educated for the market, but also ready to be mobilized for change. "In the coming period, universities can play at least two important national roles. One is to model the sort of democratic and merit-based institutions that Egyptians aspire to in other spheres. A second way that universities can contribute is by elevating the principle and practice of service." The Editorial Committee is currently requesting papers for consideration for the Autumn 2011 edition of the Australasian Journal of University-Community Engagement. Building Sustainable Communities through Engagement is the theme and could encompass:
Organized by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM – National University of Malaysia), this workshop will seek to extract and consolidate the knowledge on USR & S from key practitioners of university and community from the ASEAN and Asia region; Identify and plan for the development of Communities of Practice in specific knowledge-driven areas that will address key challenges across the ASEAN and Asia region; and Document the current status of USR&S in the ASEAN and Asia region and discuss ways to move forward. 
In partnership between the Centre for Community Based Research (Canada) and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, CU Expo2011 will showcase the exemplars in Community-University partnerships worldwide, and explore and introduce creative ways of strengthening our local communities. Objectives include:
The PASCAL Universities Regional Engagement Project (PURE) has now completed its pilot phase in working with public authorities and their higher education institutions in order to explore how best to develop useful and practical working partnerships. This meeting is an opportunity to discuss, with the PURE team and with PURE client regions, how the project developed, what it learned and how it might apply to your public authority, your institution or your professional body. The PURE meeting will provide insight into how engagement may best developed, what tools are best suited and, most significantly, how it may be progressed in a climate of austerity. 
Join community partners, faculty, administrators, and students interested in deepening their understandings and practices of community-higher education partnerships. Through a blend of presentations from the field, plenaries and working sessions, the Institute will explore strategies to address persistent challenges, analyze promising practices, and examine research to advance the study of partnerships. 
In accordance with the increasing awareness of Service-Learning, the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) of Lingnan University, Lingnan Foundation, and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia have joined together to expand Service-Learning programs throughout the Asia-Pacific Region. The conference aims at gathering educators, students, government officials and service providers from around the world to exchange ideas on the development and the role of Service-Learning in making a difference in the society. 
Presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors of Talloires Network member universities will gather in Madrid along with other Network leaders and partners to discuss the next five years of the higher education civic engagement movement. We will strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development. 
PIACBV was established in 2007 to work with high-risk populations in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Its main objective is the construction of communal spaces called Extension Centers which promote social integration, local development, and further opening the resources available to the community. Each Extension Center includes an information office with university staff who not only provide information on the services provided but also collect the demands and concerns of various local stakeholders including local government, community organizations, and individuals. This information is used to plan new interventions and to evaluate/adjust ongoing projects. The projects undertaken through the Extension Centers focus on three broad areas: Non-Formal Education (literacy, tutoring, job training, digital literacy, vocational and teacher training); Community Health (primary health care, nutrition, eye health, cardiovascular risk, dentistry) and Community Development (legal assistance, workshop on citizenship, recreational activities).
