Visit our website for a list of participants and their profiles>> I am thrilled that we have such a large and diverse group coming together to share their ideas and experience, and I look forward to a dynamic and productive conference that will help set the future direction for the Network. This gathering will help us to refine the collective ideas of the members into a forward-looking, action-oriented set of Conference resolutions, which will lay out our core principles and outline a vibrant role and agenda for the Network going forward. Conference participants will also be invited to consider changes in the Network’s governance structure, a draft of which will be presented for consideration in advance of the meeting. The goal will be to ensure that the organization of the Network meets the needs of its growing and diverse portfolio of activities and programs, and reflects the diversity of its membership, while remaining nimble and able to address new challenges and opportunities. Carnegie Corporation support for conference We are pleased to announce that Carnegie Corporation of New York has partnered with the Talloires Network to support the travel and accommodation expenses for senior administrators of African universities attending the Talloires Network Global Leaders Conference. This support will allow university leaders from across Africa to share their experiences with community engagement with their colleagues from around the world. Carnegie Corporation has committed tremendous resources to strengthening higher education in Africa, and we are grateful for Carnegie’s generous support of African participants in the Madrid conference. Establishment of a service learning site has provided alternative options for placements of social work students within the community engagement context. The site has also created opportunities for various academic departments at UNISA to become involved in community based research and applied research responsive to societal needs. This research is disseminated to the community as well as organizations functioning in the community to inform service delivery and decision making. Thus far, 15 NGOs have been assisted with capacity building through management workshops, debriefing support groups, counseling, and consultation services. Issues addressed have included unemployment, homelessness, integration of the refugee community, and xenophobia. UNISA also collaborates closely with UNHCR on refugee issues.
