Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) is based at five locations in the west of Ireland. Launched as the Regional Technical College Galway in 1972, the institution became Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in 1998 and now enrolls about 9,000 students. Research, Development and Innovation

 The Office of Research, Development & Innovation supports the development and delivery of the Institute’s Research Strategy. This office manages all aspects of externally funded research at the Institute. It is also responsible for the development of research alliances with industry and other organisations in addition to managing both Innovation in Business Centres (IiBC) in Galway and Castlebar. The IiBCs work with entrepreneurs who have identified new business niches to start new enterprises. The office is also responsible for the Midlands & West Enterprise Programme (MWEP), which provides entrepreneurs with business skills, networks, facilitates and supports necessary to navigate the business start-up process. Alternative Entry

GMIT is committed to providing opportunities for adult learners who may not have completed secondary school. In some cases, GMIT accepts extensive work or life experience which has prepared an applicant for higher education. In addition, GMIT has an Access Office which co-ordinates the delivery of pre-entry training programmes for adult learners who require further preparation before embarking on a third level program. Volunteering

 GMIT encourages students and staff to get involved in voluntary activities that benefit the local community and environment, from local fund-raising activities, to international relief efforts. Tens of thousands of euro have been raised over the years for a wide variety of charities including Console, Alan Kerins African Projects, Serve, Jigsaw, Habitat for Humanity, Cancer Care West and Cope Galway.
