Baqai Medical University (BMU) was established in 1996 by virtue of a bill passed in the Sindh Assembly and then notified by the Governor of Sindh as Baqai Medical University. Presently, the university stands on a campus of 72 acres in Karachi with an area of 727,374 sq.ft in seven blocks of buildings. It houses 13 institutions, shoulders the responsibility of teaching 1800 students, and awards 19 degrees and diplomas programs in various specialties. It employs more than 1000 individuals in different capacities. It is the only university in Pakistan established on the theme of Community-Based and Community-Oriented Medical Education. The futuristic mission of our Community-Oriented University is being adhered to and continuous improvement and widening of paradigms of education being imparted to students as its integral component so that they can compete with all international standards and serve the community.

BMU is involved in many community based projects along its principal responsibility of producing medical doctors of cutting edge medical education and skills. Few are mentioned below:

1)      Social Obstetric Unit One – Gadap.

Social Obstetric is conceived as a way of dealing with maternal mortality and the plight of rural deprived women. The unit offers the fully integrated services of education, healthcare and self-help strengthening..

 

 

 

 

2)    Baqai Medical Complex – Khuda Ki Basti 

The complex is situated in the far flung area of Karachi, known as Surjani town. Hundreds of patients visit this medical facility for free OPD. The medical facility also has an Operation Theater for eye patients.

This complex has a school without any tuition fee. Four hundred students are enrolled over there. Text books, stationary, uniforms and lunch are also provided free of charge to the students.

 

 

 

3)      Salimullah Fahmi Health Education Centre – Gulberg

This health education center was established with the objectives of:

  • Creating awareness among masses about health problems.
  • Involving and motivating the community to plan for and solve their own health problems,
  • Serving as an urban Primary Health Care Centre

 

 

Services provided here include:

  • Counseling and guidance to the patients and their family members, individually.
  • Health education, group sessions on nutrition, immunization, family welfare and rehabilitation of diabetic patients.
  • In addition to this, different O.P.Ds are being run on a no profit no loss basis including Cardiac, Diabetic, Antenatal, Psychiatric, Eye and Pediatrics.
  • Health Education through Urdu language Magazine, Baqa-e-sehat, containing articles for the general public, printed and distributed among the members.
  • Continuing Medical Education programs on health issues for general public and general physicians, conducted on a regular basis.
