Dear colleagues,
Last week, I was part of a panel conversation at the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit. I joined other university leaders in discussing the question of how we can ensure a quality education for all at a time when there are hundreds of millions of new higher education students around the globe. At Tufts, we consider that giving students the opportunity to make a societal impact through transformative experiences is a key part of our mission. That’s why we remain committed to establishing a premier network for engaged universities, scholars, and practitioners.
In New York, the steering committee made important decisions to ensure the sustainability and growth of our network’s reach and operations. We will introduce a dues contribution system for member universities to invest into a network they can call their own in addition to our funding through foundation and government grants. We have also updated our leadership structure to include student voices and will actively begin a search for new committee members. Please contact our secretariat if there’s a university civic engagement leader who you think should be part of our global leadership body.

Talloires Network Steering Committee Meeting in NYC
The Talloires Network steering committee met in New York City on August 24-25 to chart the future direction of the network, with a consideration of recent leadership transitions and a look toward the future and the 2017 global conference. Nominations for steering committee members are now open. The committee will convene again by phone in early 2017. Read more>>>

Representatives from the Youth Economic Participation Initiative (YEPI) programs traveled from around the world for a week-long gathering at the Tufts European Center, birthplace of the Talloires Network. Read more>>>

Tulane University Students Help Community Recover from Floods
Tulane University’s Center for Public Service conducted a flood recovery initiative among its students to help residents of Louisiana cope with the effects of the floods that hit the area in August. From gutting homes to providing school supplies for children, Tulane students, faculty and staff are lending their hearts and hands to the ongoing recovery efforts. Read more>>>

The MasterCard Foundation, a key supporter of the Talloires Network, believes collaboration, innovation and youth-led approaches in the social entrepreneurship space can bring sustainable solutions to the youth employment challenge. Ahfad University for Women’s “Creating Opportunity for Youth Employment Project”
The Ahfad University for Women in Sudan is conducting a project to promote employability among its students by addressing the employment problems of youth before they graduate from university, rather than focusing only on unemployed graduates. Read more>>>

Becker College is a private college in Worcester, Massachusetts. Students’ ongoing efforts in the local community include the Community Harvest Project, Friendly House, Worcester Refugee Assistance Program (WRAP), African Community Education (ACE), Boston Urban Outreach, etc. Read more>>>
The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is situated in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It is a member of the South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum. The Engagement Information and Development (EID) Unit was formed in 2014 within the Centre for Academic Engagement and Collaboration (CAEC) to facilitate management of the strategic institutional projects related to the advancement of Engagement at NMMU.
