Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow
I am pleased to report that the Talloires Network continues to grow steadily in both numbers and diversity. Last month the Talloires Network reached 205 members in 58 countries with a total enrollment of nearly 5.8 million students. Our continued growth demonstrates the momentum of the global movement for engaged universities, as well as the Talloires Network’s prominent place in this movement. Many of our member institutions will be represented at our upcoming Global Leaders Conference, “Building the Engaged University, Moving beyond the Ivory Tower.” With over 100 participants already confirmed, I am looking forward to a tremendously successful gathering of stakeholders from all over the world, including university presidents, heads of regional networks, Talloires Network Steering Committee members, government officials, and philanthropic leaders. In addition to keynote addresses by prominent voices in the field, dynamic breakout sessions will provide opportunities for all participants to contribute their ideas and experience. The conference will be held on 14-16 June at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Some highlights will include the presentation of the 2011 MacJannet Prize, the launch of The Engaged University: International Perspectives on Civic Engagement, and a reception at the residence of the US Ambassador to Spain. Presidents and Vice-Chancellors of Talloires Network institutions who are interested in attending should contact Elizabeth Babcock (babcock@icicp.org) for more information. Travel grants are available for participants from developing nations. "It has been a great pleasure to watch the progress of the Talloires Network since our inaugural meeting in 2005," said Jan Reid, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney and member of our Steering Committee. "My university’s involvement in the Network has helped us promote and expand our outreach activities in literacy, schools partnerships and environmental sustainability, and enhanced out students’ engagement with the economically diverse and multicultural communities in our region."
