GW’s Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service

The Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service at The George Washington University provides a vast amount of opportunities for GW students to engage in community service with the Washington, DC area. Opportunities span from volunteer work to service-learning courses to internships with community organizations. Service-Learning at GW

The George Washington University offers over 45 service-learning classes that range from introductory-level courses to senior capstones. Through these courses, students build on their knowledge of working in the service sector and apply their skills to resolve real world problems. In addition to individual courses, GW hosts various service-learning events throughout the academic year, including Service-Learning Awareness Week, Service-Learning Speaker Series and numerous conferences focused on nonprofit development and social change. The Neighbors Project

The mission of the Neighbors Project is to “promote awareness and understanding of social and economic inequalities through the education and placement of GW volunteers in agencies that drive social change throughout the District.” The program was founded in 1993 and now serves as GW’s primary volunteer placement program. The Neighbors Project connects students wishing to get involved in service projects with over 30 different nonprofit organizations working in the DC community. Students can choose to serve from different issue areas, including Adult Education, Cultural Service, Environment Sustainability, Hunger & Homelessness, Intervention Services, Pre-K & Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Senior Citizens, and Serving Veterans.
