If you have not yet given us your feedback, I encourage you to take this brief survey. We have been very pleased with the positive feedback regarding our newsletter content, and the responses we have received will continue to guide our approach. For example, there was very positive reaction to adding a featured interview to the newsletter. This month, we have a chance to learn from Steve Garlick of the Centre for Sustainable Regional Engagement at the University of the Sunshine Coast. His interview can be found below. As a Network driven by the needs of our members, we invite your feedback and hope you will suggest opportunities or resources that would help other members promote and expand civic engagement. Furthermore, we rely on you not only to promote civic engagement at your own universities, but also to engage your peers at other institutions in a dialogue about the importance of community engagement and to encourage them to join the Network. Through our combined efforts, we will continue to build a global movement of socially engaged universities. Announcements First Annual MacJannet Prize Awards Ceremony The Talloires Network would like to invite all of its members to attend the first MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship Awards Ceremony to be held June 6, 2009 in Talloires, France. One student and one program administrator from the first and second place winners will be flown in for the ceremony. The MacJannet Foundation board and Talloires Network staff will also participate in this exciting event. The eight winning programs will be announced on April 13, 2009. If you are interested in attending the ceremony, please contact Elizabeth Babcock. Talloires Network News Budd Hall wins University of Victoria Community Leadership Award Dr. Budd Hall, director of the Office of Community-Based Research at the University of Victoria, has worked on the development of educational methods that engage all members of the community including marginalized populations. The Community Leadership Awards salute exemplary leadership in linking UVic with the wider community and enriching the social, cultural and economic life of our city. Learn more>> Featured Interview Based on the results of our newsletter survey, we have decided to add a new section to our newsletter format – interviews with students, faculty, and staff at our member institutions. The following is an excerpt from an interview conducted with Steve Garlick, a professor in the Centre for Sustainable Regional Engagement at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia: In light of the recent tragic fires in southern Australia, what do you see as the role of universities in disaster relief efforts? The disastrous impact of the Victorian fires on human life and property and on animal life and the environment has highlighted a number of important issues that need to be examined in much more detail. . . While these issues and others will be dealt with by the Royal Commission set up to investigate all aspects of the fires, there is no doubt universities, with their communities, government and other agencies, can assist in disaster situations like this. . . Read the entire interview>> Learn more about Steve Garlick on our Civic Engagement Experts List>> Higher Education News U.S. faculty: Civic engagement, diversity important goals for undergrad education A survey of teaching faculty at US universities conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA has found that 55.5% of US faculty believe that it is "very important" or "essential" to "instill in students a commitment to community service," up from 36.4% just four years ago. Learn more>> Julia Gillard Gives Speech on Equity in Australian HE Admissions Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister stated, "Equity is more than a moral issue, it is also an economic issue. Equity matters to national productivity. It has always done so but the global financial crisis brings a new urgency to the debate. Why? Because when the recovery does come we will need to ensure that everyone is able to fill the increasing opportunities presented by an expanding economy." Read more of Gillard’s speech>> Opportunities British Council Education Partnerships in Africa Grants The British Council has opened Round 3 of its Education Partnerships in Africa grants. The grants will fund partnerships between universities in the United Kingdom and sub-Saharan Africa. These partnerships must focus on employability and entrepreneurship skills for students to benefit local economies in sub-Saharan Africa, and contribute to capacity building in African institutions. The deadline for applications is 5 May 2009. Visit the British Council website for more info>> LEADHER Program The Leadership for Higher Education Reform (LEADHER) Programme connects professionals in higher education institutions working to improve the match between societal demands and what higher education institutions offer. Winning institutions will receive a grant and opportunities for international collaboration. The deadline for the Spring 2009 competition is 15 May. Learn more>> Education for Sustainable Development – Call for Applications The United Nations University is calling for applications for new Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development. Those organizations who are interested in initiating the RCE process and applying for RCE status are requested to send expressions of interest to UNU-IAS by 15 April 2009. Applicant RCEs are then requested to submit an application and an application summary by 15 June 2009. Learn more>> Papers and Publications The Power of Partnerships: A Transatlantic Dialogue This publication from the American Council on Education (ACE) takes a close look at the role partnerships play in helping institutions of higher education meet the challenges of a fast-changing environment. The essay explores five key areas as they relate to partnerships, at home and abroad, and with corporations, non-governmental organizations, and community groups: the motivation to initiate and maintain partnerships; the economics of cooperation; conflicts inherent in cooperation; the role of government; and issues related to the special case of partnerships with the private sector. April 20-22, 2009 The International Association of Universities, in partnership with the Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Institutos de Enseñanza Superior (ANUIES) is organizing this meeting on international networks within the higher education field. Susan Stroud, Executive Director of Innovations in Civic Participation, will speak during a parallel workshop, focusing on “Emerging actors on the global landscape – their specificity, role and links to associations.” Learn more>> International Partnership Institute: "Reciprocal Partnerships: Transforming Higher Education and Community for the Future." Portland, Oregon. May 18-19, 2009 Join community and campus practitioners and scholars to deeply explore engaged teaching, research and service partnerships – their proven mechanisms and strategies for success, persistent challenges, and the scholarship of partnerships. This institute is co-sponsored by the Talloires Network. Learn more>> Campus Engage conference: “Higher Education and Civic Engagement Partnerships: Create, Challenge, Change.” Dublin, Ireland. June 4-5, 2009 This will be the first annual international conference sponsored by Campus Engage, a network for the promotion of civic engagement in Irish higher education. The conference will provide participants from community and higher education with an opportunity to discuss the potential for change offered by civic engagement partnerships in areas such as service learning / community-based learning, research, civic education and volunteering. The Talloires Network is a co-sponsor of the conference. Learn more>> Social Responsibility and Civic Engagement: An Urgent Priority for Higher Education. London 16–18 June 2009 Hosted by Roehampton University, this international conference is intended to stimulate fresh thinking about the relationships between higher education institutions and their local communities. It will examine how partnerships with the public, private and voluntary sectors, which encourage civic engagement and support the development of local communities, can be built and sustained. The conference will feature contributions from several civic engagement experts, including two that work closely with the Talloires Network: Dr. Lorraine McIlrath, National University of Ireland, Galway; and Professor Sir David Watson, Institute of Education, London. Learn more>> Expanding Civic Engagement in Arab Universities: A Peer Learning Workshop for Faculty. American University of Beirut, Lebanon. June 23-26, 2009 Sponsored by the Ma’an Arab University Alliance for Civic Engagement, this workshop is open to faculty and staff members from Arab universities. Topics to be covered include: the basics of civic engagement; the basics of community-based learning; community based research and scholarship; building & strengthening community partnerships. For more information and to register, visit the website>> Featured Civic Engagement Program Radio Salus at the National University of Rwanda Supported by UNESCO and staffed by students from NUR’s School of Journalism and Communications, Radio Salus acts as a link between the University and the Community by offering to listeners a variety of programs in areas such as health, family issues, environment, human rights, justice, and the rule of law. Learn more>> Resource of the Month Glossary of Outreach and Engagement Terminology in Higher Education One of the challenges of discussing and promoting civic engagement internationally is finding a shared vocabulary and definitions of civic engagement. This glossary, produced by the John D. Gerhart Center at the American University in Cairo, attempts to do just that. The glossary is also being translated into Arabic to provide common civic engagement language for Arab universities. Learn more>>
