Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow In addition to the progress we have already made, the Talloires Network is currently engaged in a number of exciting projects. The Network has recently launched a Twinning Program for six universities in Africa, the US, and the UK, and is in the process of raising funds for the partnership. David Watson, Susan Stroud, and Rob Hollister continue their work on The Engaged University, a book of case studies on civic engagement at Talloires member institutions. In March 2010, the Network will be hosting a meeting of its Steering Committee members and regional partners at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy; you can find more information about this exciting event in the Announcements section below. Finally, the Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation have issued a call for nominations for the second annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. With your continued collaboration, we are confident that we will continue to make steady progress in the Network’s fifth year. Talloires Network wins grant to hold conference at Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center On March 23-27, 2010, members of the Talloires Network Steering Committee, Secretariat staff, and representatives of higher education networks from around the world will gather at the Bellagio Center to assess the current state of higher education civic engagement, including the Talloires Network’s efforts to date, map the regional challenges to the implementation of strategies to engage universities with the community, and plot a course for future action. The Talloires Network is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to hold a meeting of Network leaders at the Bellagio Conference Center in Italy. The Bellagio Center program provides space for debates on world issues, for translating theory into action and for devising creative responses to some of the most pressing issues of our time, especially those directed at alleviating poverty and vulnerability.
The Talloires Network has made tremendous progress since our launch at the 2005 Talloires Conference. We have grown from 29 original members to 137 members in 48 countries. We are particularly proud of the diversity of institutions represented in the Network. As stated by Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, founding president of Aga Khan University and a member of the Talloires Network Steering Committee, “The remarkable diversity of institutions in the Talloires Network has enabled its members to learn from each other about the value, importance and methodology of engaging with the communities in which they function.”
With the new academic year set to begin on 3 October, Egyptian universities are planning a shift to distance learning in an effort to prevent the spread of the swine flu virus on campuses. Television and the internet will be used extensively to broadcast lectures to students in many of the country’s 35 public and private universities, officials said. Read the full report on
More low-income students would make it to college if changes were made to streamline the complicated financial aid process, according to a groundbreaking study released today by researchers at Harvard, Stanford, the University of Toronto, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. The editors call for manuscripts that document and assess partnerships between institutions of higher education and K-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and corporations that have been made successful (or even unsuccessful in interesting ways) in part through the use of emerging and evolving digital technologies. Topics or sites might include service-learning; internships; volunteer programs; cooperative education; distance-learning; continuing education; professional schools such as law, medicine, education, and nursing; community development programs including alumni relations and fundraising; and/or sponsored research. Youth Service America is partnering with the National Education Association to offer Youth Leaders for Literacy grants to American children and youth, ages 5-25, who offer innovative ways to increase literacy skills and appreciation for reading among their peers. Youth can submit their applications through October 30, 2009. Youth Leaders for Literacy will award 30 young people from across the U.S. each with $500 grants and $500 in books from the Pearson Foundation. Successful projects will be youth-led and address an established literacy need in the applicant’s school or community. Additional information is available on the
Leo Charbonneau has written this article which tracks the growth of Community Service-Learning programs across Canada. Following up on a cover story published just over five years ago, Charbonneau interviewed a number of key informants across the country to provide an overview of current activities, concluding that "Students are the driving force behind the rapid growth of community service learning projects across the country". The article will appear in the October 2009 print edition of the Canadian magazine University Affairs.
