Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow At my own university, opening convocations take place in various forms at all our different schools. The most solemn and formal of them takes place when we welcome our entering undergraduates at Matriculation. Each year, I exhort our newest students to get involved in life beyond campus. I remind them that at Tufts we expect every graduate to be an active, engaged, effective citizen not just of our own university community but of the world at large. I ask them to try to make a difference as students and graduates. I remind them that in doing so they will be faithful to our founding vision—since the founders of our university believed passionately that with education comes responsibility, and that those who are educated have the capacity to transform the lives of those less fortunate. Institutionally and individually, all of us in the Talloires Network share ideals and goals of civic engagement and active citizenship. Each of our member institutions has developed innovative approaches to civic engagement that draw on its distinctive traditions and advance its educational mission. I am sure that this academic year will see even further advances for the worldwide movement of engaged universities, and look forward to making the Talloires Network even more active and effective in this work. For many of us, a new academic year has just begun. This is always an exhilarating time on any university campus, as we welcome newcomers and returning students alike. Many of us are accustomed to mark the occasion with solemn rituals that remind our communities of shared ideals and goals. 
The 2010 MacJannet Prize will be awarded at a ceremony on 15 September 2010 at the Tufts European Center in Talloires, France. The Talloires Network will fly two representatives from each of the eight winning programs to receive their awards in person at the Award Ceremony and participate in two days of workshops. The Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar in collaboration with the Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) at the University of Brighton and the Sub-Saharan Africa Participatory Research Network are organizing a conference on Community University Partnerships. The conference will provide a platform for those who are interested to share and exchange ideas on social responsibility related issues. It hopes to develop and strengthen relationships in view of building a strong network and fostering continuous future collaboration among participants. Organisations such as institutions of higher learning, corporate bodies, government agencies and NGOs are invited to take part in this international conference. 
The International Association of National Youth Service (IANYS) is hosting its 9th Global Conference in Alexandria, Egypt. This is an exciting opportunity for professionals in the field of youth development to come together to share information and current developments in the field with other policymakers, practitioners, and researchers; nurture connections for developing future projects; and discuss the emerging impact of service in the context of youth employability and youth service policy among other important themes. Conference participants will include professionals in the field of youth civic engagement from across the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region and around the world. 
Co-sponsored by the International Association for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement, the Center for Service and Learning at IUPUI, and Indiana Campus Compact, this conference is targeted to those interested in research on service-learning, campus-community partnerships, and civic outcomes of education. Presenters will include faculty and administrators in higher education, educators in K-12, and scholars and practitioners in educational policy and community development. Scholars and attendees from outside of the United States are encouraged to attend and present to advance mutual understanding of this work from multiple perspectives. 
The Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) is organizing this conference to respond to the challenges of sustainability as well as to identify ways for action. The Conference offers a collective work dynamic and active participation. With this methodology, the Conference will include parallel working sessions in two areas: the first will be a dynamic space for exchanging experiences and good practices to analyze how the world regions are advancing with the introduction of sustainability; the second will be a work space where participants will discuss and propose ways of action that contribute to the transformation of higher education. GUNI has issued a call for Good Practices for sessions in the first area. 
The Citizens’ Activities are a set of development activities (reforestation, Health, and Literacy) that UCAD has led across Senegal since 2000, to promote good citizenship and a sense of community service in students, and especially to support disadvantaged communities in solving problems that impede their development. For example, in 2009 the program provided medical consultations to 5382 patients, computer science training to 132 community members, literacy education to 168 community members, and planted over 150,000 trees in reforestation efforts.
