Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow One of the primary goals of the Talloires Network is to support the development of higher education civic engagement in countries and regions where the idea of the engaged university is just getting off the ground. One such country is Russia, where a new network of universities supported by the New Eurasia Foundation and the Mott Foundation is working to build a mutually beneficial relationship between the university and the community. The Talloires Network recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Russian Community Universities Network, and we look forward to a fruitful collaboration. The first joint activity we are undertaking is a study tour by a number of administrators and faculty from Russian federal and state universities. The delegation will be visiting the US this week to consult with Talloires Network secretariat staff on the development of civic engagement at their universities and to meet with administrators and civic engagement staff at several US universities, including American University, Georgetown University, and the University of Maryland – Baltimore County. They will participate in workshops and discussions about the importance of civic engagement and community outreach within higher education in the United States. They will draw on this new knowledge in launching community projects at their home institutions. I am confident that this visit will benefit all those involved, and I look forward to the further development of civic engagement in Russian higher education. The establishment of a Russian university civic engagement network is another sign of how much the global movement for social responsibility in higher education has grown in the five years since the founding of the Talloires Network. I hope all of you are as energized as I am by such evidence of momentum. The Talloires Network Global Conference will take place 14-16 June 2011 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. In order to celebrate the five year anniversary of the founding of the Talloires Network, we would like to again gather university leaders from around the world to discuss the next five years of the higher education civic engagement movement. We will gather presidents, vice chancellors and rectors from across the globe, representing the diversity of our 185 member universities from 58 countries. We will strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development.
Earlier this year, the Talloires Network signed an MOU with the New Eurasia Foundation. The purpose of the partnership is to provide support for the development of community engagement activities at Russian universities. The New Eurasia Foundation launched its Community-Universities Network with support from the Mott Foundation. This network is providing support to smaller regional and local universities in order to strengthen their connections with local business, government, community organizations and to encourage social entrepreneurship on their campuses. Traditionally, Russian universities have been closed off from society and there is now a new effort at the federal level to require more public engagement. Using our international connections, knowledge of best practices, and models for inventorying and assessing community engagement, the Talloires Network will provide support to these universities and the New Eurasia Foundation. Our goals are to launch demonstration projects, evaluate initial successes, share best practices and create a framework for evaluating social engagement at Russian universities.
From October 13-17, the EUforIA Latin America Youth Summit (ELAYS) was held at the University of Geneva. A group of young social entrepreneurs from Latin America were hosted by the university to present their initiatives and have discussions with Swiss students on innovative ways to implement these initiatives. Experts in various areas like project management, PR, and web design also joined the meeting to give suggestions on how to make these projects successful. ELAYS was organized by EUforIA, a non-profit youth organization based in Geneva, with support from the University of Geneva.
This publication from the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, written by Silver Donald Cameron, explores the community service-learning (CSL) movement in Canada and shares insights about this revolutionary method of teaching and learning. The best examples of community service-learning initiatives demonstrate how engagement can mobilize knowledge, help solve problems, and create responsible citizens.
Community Builders is an intergenerational collaboration of people and organizations designed to put into action the goal of “Taking responsibility for our communities, and making them better through public action,” both locally and globally. The purpose of Community Builders is to help people be better citizens by talking about the importance of communities, practicing the skills that can help improve communities, and engaging in projects that support communities. Each participant is placed in a “neighborhood” which has 7 to 12 people of various ages led by Wartburg students. In addition, during May Term, Community Builders college students travel to Nicaragua to deliver school supply and hygiene kits to children and teachers and undertake additional service projects identified by Self-Help International.
