Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow I am pleased to report on our preparations for the Talloires Network’s upcoming global leadership conference in Madrid in June 2011. Our first day of proceedings, Tuesday, June 14, will be held at Banco Santander’s Financial City in Madrid; during the subsequent two days, we will meet on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Other highlights will include a reception at the residence of US Ambassador to Spain Alan Solomont and the presentation of the 2011 MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. I invite you to review our preliminary agenda for more information. We will soon provide additional information on accommodations and the availability of travel grants. In addition to keynote addresses by international leaders in university civic engagement, the conference will feature small break-out sessions to fully engage all participants in the discussion on the current state and future possibilities for socially responsible and engaged universities. This will be the first full meeting of the presidents, vice-chancellors, and rectors of Talloires Network universities since our founding conference in 2005. We will also be joined by funders, journalists, and representatives of regional higher education networks. I look forward to a dynamic and engaging exchange of ideas! A reminder: The nomination deadline for this year’s MacJannet Prize is December 15. The Prize recognizes outstanding civic engagement programs at our member universities and contributes financially to their ongoing service efforts. The Talloires Network Global Conference will take place 14-16 June 2011 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. In order to celebrate the five year anniversary of the founding of the Talloires Network, we would like to again gather university leaders from around the world to discuss the next five years of the higher education civic engagement movement. We will gather presidents, vice chancellors and rectors from across the globe, representing the diversity of our 187 member universities from 58 countries. We will strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development. 
The Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation are pleased to call for nominations for the third annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. The MacJannet Prize recognizes exceptional student civic engagement initiatives based in Talloires Network member universities around the world. One first prize ($5,000), two second prizes ($2,500 each), and five third-place prizes ($1,000 each) will be awarded. Winning programs will be profiled on the Talloires Network website and in communications that reach thousands of higher education contacts world-wide. Representatives from winning programs will also be hosted by the Talloires Network and MacJannet Foundation to receive their award in person at a special Award Ceremony. Nominations are due by 
Prof. Dr. Saran Kaur Gill has been recognized by the Australian High Commission as the Malaysian Education Personality of the Year for 2010 for strengthening the Australia-Malaysia education relationship. Prof. Saran is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Industry and Community Partnerships at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Since taking that post in 2007 Saran has worked to expand UKM’s community engagement work. She participated in the Talloires Network’s conference in Bellagio this spring, and she is currently developing an Asian higher education community engagement network affiliated with the Talloires Network. 
The deadly fire that decimated the Carmel Forest region of northern Israel may be out, but the devastation is being felt all around the University of Haifa’s campus. The university lost students and alumni, communities are still displaced, people are in shock, and businesses have been destroyed. For that reason, the University of Haifa has launched the Carmel Fire Emergency Campaign to provide humanitarian support to the University community, including clinical and therapeutic assistance to students directly affected by the fire. 
The University of Señor de Sipán (Peru) has issued a special service-learning oriented edition of Tzhoecoen, the university’s academic journal. This special edition was edited with the support of the Organization of Ibero-American States and CLAYSS and included articles produced by university representatives from across the region. “Tzhoecoen” in the Mochican language means “he that brings wisdom,” in keeping with the mission of a publication that has incorporated a wide variety of experiences and knowledge born from the practices of service in all Ibero-American countries. 
Written by by Scott J. Peters with Theodore R. Alter and Neil Schwartzbach (Michigan State University Press, 2010), Democracy and Higher Education addresses the role of higher education in a democratic society by combining an examination of several normative traditions of civic engagement in American higher education with the presentation and interpretation of a dozen oral history profiles of contemporary practitioners. In his analysis of these profiles, Scott Peters reveals and interprets a democratic-minded civic professionalism that includes and interweaves expert, social critic, responsive service, and proactive leadership roles. 
The Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) in collaboration with The Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP) at the University of Brighton and the Sub-Saharan Africa Participatory Research Network (REPAS) are organizing a conference on Community University Partnerships. The conference will take place at UCAD and will be presided over by the Senegalese Head of State, his Excellency President Abdoulaye Wade. The purpose of the conference is to bring together students, scholars, civil society organizations and local communities to exchange experiences and practices of community-university partnership activities with a focus on the Africa region. The conference forms part of a joint British Council funded project on ‘Student Community Engagement for Employability and Entrepreneurship with concrete examples from the Africa Region.’
In partnership between the Centre for Community Based Research (Canada) and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, CU Expo2011 will showcase the exemplars in Community-University partnerships worldwide, and explore and introduce creative ways of strengthening our local communities. Objectives include:
Join community partners, faculty, administrators, and students interested in deepening their understandings and practices of community-higher education partnerships. Through a blend of presentations from the field, plenaries and working sessions, the Institute will explore strategies to address persistent challenges, analyze promising practices, and examine research to advance the study of partnerships. 
In accordance with the increasing awareness of Service-Learning, the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) of Lingnan University, Lingnan Foundation, and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia have joined together to expand Service-Learning programs throughout the Asia-Pacific Region. The conference aims at gathering educators, students, government officials and service providers from around the world to exchange ideas on the development and the role of Service-Learning in making a difference in the society.

The HIV/AIDS program began with an FM radio station called Dynamite FM established in 1998. The station is used to educate the local community on environmental issues, HIV/AIDS, public hygiene, and other issues. The program then expanded to field work where designated students and staff visit mining communities to interact with them; administer questionnaires on HIV/AIDS prevention; put on various seminar discussions, public fora, video presentations and plays to educate the local population on HIV/AIDS prevention; and to distribute condoms in the local mining camps. Since the program’s inception, the HIV infection rate in Tarkwa, Ghana has dropped from over 4% to 2.5%.
