Amherst College is a private liberal arts college in Amherst, Massachusetts. Amherst was founded in 1821 and has been coeducational since 1975. Amherst College is now widely regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation, enrolling a diverse group of approximately 1,600 young men and women. Amherst offers the B.A. degree in 34 fields of study, and Amherst’s open curriculum allows each student to chart an individual course through more than 800 offered courses. Center for Community Engagement
The CCE brings together Amherst students, faculty, alumni and community partners to create opportunities for students to engage the world around them. The Center designs opportunities that are linked to Amherst courses and co-curricular opportunities where students learn the skills and knowledge to be effective public problem solvers. The CCE also serves as a central resource for information about student groups doing engagement work and a community bulletin board with postings about upcoming events, local service opportunities, and fellowships and internships. Sustainability at Amherst
Sustainability is a core principle that guides all of Amherst College’s operations–from the food served to the vehicles driven. Amherst has run a variety of student initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, including a light bulb exchange program to improve energy efficiency and a Dorm Energy Competition to reward dorms that reduce their energy consumptions.
