Membership in the Talloires Network of Engaged Universities signals an institutional commitment to the ideals of university community engagement, social service and responsibility, international collaboration and local collective action to address pressing problems. Our Engaged Membership is a growing coalition that includes 43 universities in 25 countries around the world.

Born at the Tufts European Center in Talloires, our network has extended its reach to every continent as the importance of a concrete social mission in higher education becomes widespread. With a look toward sustainability in the years ahead, the Network’s Steering Committee instituted a tiered membership dues structure in 2017 to foster investment and growth in network operations.

Engaged member universities commit to supporting Network programs, initiatives, and research by contributing annual dues based on their host country’s Human Development Index rating, according to the United Nations Development Program. Annual dues under this system range between $500 to $7,500 per year and are determined according to a university’s geographic location. Engaged members allow other, less well-endowed universities to participate in this crucial work, helping to lead the global movement of civic engagement in higher education.

Engaged Membership Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between Engaged and Signatory Membership?

The Talloires Network offers two options for membership.

Signatory Members have committed to supporting the ideals and values of the Talloires Declaration. The head of the institution must sign a letter of commitment and assign an institutional liaison. Signatory Members receive access to all programs, events, funding opportunities that the Network offers. There is no fee associated with signatory membership.

Engaged Members are Signatory Members that have also committed to supporting Talloires Network strategic priorities, programs, and activities by contributing to its financial sustainability and development. Engaged Member universities will also have opportunities to (1) elevate the visibility of their leadership in civic engagement to an international audience; (2) contribute to the strategic direction of the Network such as the design and development of new programs; and (3) receive a preference for participation in the Network’s grant and award programs.
