Hiroshima University’s Civic Engagement Activities

Hiroshima University is dedicated to fostering civic engagement and making a meaningful impact on society through various initiatives, notably the Town & Gown Initiative. Town & Gown Initiative, a partnership between Hiroshima University and the cities of Higashi-Hiroshima and Kure, focuses on sustainable community development. This partnership fosters a comprehensive, interactive, and systematic relationship that integrates the cities’ administrative resources with the university’s research and educational expertise. A key feature is the establishment of a new international exchange facility, which serves as a hub for Hiroshima University’s international activities, frequently hosing events that invite local residents to engage with the university community. One highlight is the International Cultural Days, where international students showcase their culture, promoting cross-cultural understanding and inclusivity.

One of the key programs under the Town & Gown Initiative is the Common Project, which addresses social issues by matching the cities administrative needs with the university’s research capabilities. Through close dialogue between the city and university’s faculty, common challenges are identified and addressed.
