Intercultural University Student Projects, Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico)
Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural (UVI) offers higher education that generates, applies, and transmits knowledge through educational programs with an intercultural focus. These programs, centered on situated learning and related research, foster the exchange of knowledge for harmony between regional, national and global visions, promoting a better and more sustainable quality of life and strengthening languages and cultures in Veracruz state.
In recent years, the need to consider cultural diversity has emerged as a priority in all areas of human endeavour in Mexico, as in the rest of the world . Convinced that higher education and research must lead efforts to achieve the welfare of societies, Universidad Veracruzana (UV) has responded to this dynamic by creating Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural (UVI), established in 2005 and consolidated as a university department in 2007 .
Today, UVI provides access to higher education for sectors of the population in four intercultural regions in Veracruz that are lacking opportunities, in an effort to identify and strengthen the potential and development of these regions. UVI has 4 regional centers , strategically distributed in rural areas throughout the state : Huasteca, Totonacapan, Grandes Montañas and Selvas.
UVI offers a degree in Intercultural Management for Development with five disciplinary orientations: Languages, Communication, Sustainability, Rights, and Health . This degree program involves ongoing community outreach projects as a central component of students’ education. It also offers a Master´s Degree in Nahua Language and Culture, unique for being the first program in the Americas completely offered in an indigenous language.
