Makerere University (Uganda)
Makerere University is an independent, public, national university in Kampala, Uganda. Originally founded as a technical school in 1922, it became part of the University of East Africa in 1963 and became independent in 1970. The mission of Makerere University is “to provide innovative teaching, learning, research and services responsive to National and Global needs.” The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, specifically, is highly engaged and has two outreach units. The Food Technology and Business Incubation Centre’s (Mak-FTBIC) role is to ” develop new food value addition businesses based on research conducted at Makerere University, impart practical skills to students and to support the graduates create their own jobs and enterprises.” The second outreach unit, Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute, Kabanyolo (MUARIK) works directly with the National Agriculture Research System to “enhance the capacity of professionals and practitioners; disseminate knowledge and technologies for sustainable development of agricultural and agro-industrial sectors.” Makerere University’s website>>
