Steve Garlick

Biography:
Steve is a professor in the Centre for Sustainable Regional Engagement at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Previously he has been Professor of Regional Development at Swinburne University of Technology (part-time, concurrent) and Professor of Regional Development at Southern Cross University. He is the Vice-President of the Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance (AUCEA), a coalition of 35 Australian universities. In 2008 he was awarded the inaugural AUCEA Fellow (FAUCEA) in recognition of his academic services to university/ community engagement. He is on the editorial committee for the Australasian Journal for University Community Engagement, co-chair AUCEA Scholarship Committee, a Board Member of the international academic network Pascal Observatory, and an advisor to the OECD/ IMHE on regional development, higher education and sustainability. He is involved in IMHE/ OECD projects on evaluating higher education and regional development and has led projects in Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, and Canada. He is a member of the National Research Advisory Group for the Australian Research Council funded initiative Cultural Awareness Mapping in Regional Australia (CAMRA) and a Board Member of the national Innovative Regions Centre Advisory Board.
His research interest is in regional development theory and policy, applied ethics, the human/ nature divide, wildlife welfare, higher education management, institutional performance assessment, and university engagement with regions and communities.
Steve has rehabilitated injured Australian wildlife for the past nine years. He has cared for over 200 macropods (kangaroos, wallaroos and wallabies) as well as wombats with a variety of injuries. He has rescued more than one thousand native animals in distress from accident or attack. He is a member of the St James Ethics Centre, chair of the ethics committee of the Wombat Protection Society of Australia and scientific advisor for the Australian Wildlife Protection Council.
