Update from the Chair: President Lawrence Bacow
As signatories to the Talloires Declaration, we share the belief that institutions of higher education have a special responsibility to contribute to the public good. As citizens in an increasingly interconnected world, we understand the critical need to promote environmental sustainability. Climate change is an issue of global importance that has particular resonance on college and university campuses. Students are increasingly seeking educational programs—often innovative and interdisciplinary in nature—that will prepare them for careers related to the environment. They are also calling on their own institutions of higher learning to make firm public commitments to combat climate change. As you read the July issue of Talloires Network News, I encourage you to think about how you can promote sustainability on your campus and in the world. The Campus Climate Challenge is a project of over 30 youth organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, leveraging the power of young people to organize on college campuses to win 100% Clean Energy policies at their schools. The Challenge is growing a generation-wide movement to stop global warming, by reducing the pollution from our colleges down to zero, and leading our society to a clean energy future.
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education is a membership-based association of colleges and universities working to advance sustainability in higher education in the US and Canada. Their mission is to promote sustainability in all sectors of higher education – from governance and operations to curriculum and outreach – through education, communication, research and professional development.
Through Earth Day Network, activists connect, interact, and impact their communities, and create positive change in local, national, and global policies. EDN’s international network reaches over 17,000 organizations in 174 countries, while the domestic program engages 5,000 groups and over 25,000 educators coordinating millions of community development and environmental protection activities throughout the year.
TakingITGlobal is an international youth-led organization that helps young people find inspiration, access information, get involved, and take action to improve their local and global communities. One of TIG’s major issue areas is Climate Change, and they have produced a Guide to Action to help students start their own projects.
