Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow
The Talloires Network has hit the ground running in 2009. We received 64 nominations for the new MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, representing 40 universities in 19 countries. Many outstanding programs were nominated, and the Talloires Network staff is busy gathering more information from the programs chosen for detailed review. The Network itself continues to expand, and we welcomed four new member universities in January. In order to get fresh ideas and perspectives we are expanding the Talloires Network Steering Committee; we are very pleased to welcome Professor Goolam Mohamedbhai, Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities, as the newest member. As part of our ongoing efforts to provide civic engagement resources to our members, we have created a list of experts on civic engagement in higher education. We hope this will help members to connect with other scholars and practitioners and gain valuable new perspectives and information. We have also asked our members to provide a list of students involved in civic engagement at their universities. This will allow us to expand our student outreach efforts by spreading the word about opportunities like the MacJannet Prize, keeping students informed about civic engagement issues, and getting student feedback on our resources and projects. This level of activity reflects the active participation of our member universities, and I am grateful for all of your efforts on behalf of civic engagement in higher education. I am very excited about the possibilities your continued collaborations offer for expanding the network and further promoting civic engagement during the coming months. Talloires Network Creates Civic Engagement Experts List As part of our ongoing mission to provide new resources to our members, the Talloires Network has created a list of civic engagement experts from our member institutions. If you have questions about civic engagement issues, feel free to contact one of our experts. We hope to continue building on this experts list, so if you or someone you know is an expert on civic engagement in higher education, please contact Hannah Ayers for inclusion on the list. The University of Europe: Accessible to All (UK) Universities in Europe are looking to embrace a new form of learning, called open content, which could blow away the division between university students and the rest of the population, writes Mandy Garner in The Guardian. In the UK, the Joint Information Systems Committee (Jisc) and the Higher Education Academy are launching a £5.7 million (US$7.9 million) pilot scheme to investigate the impact of open content and to look at issues of how to contextualise existing online material so anyone can make sense of it. Several European academics are already experimenting and the European Commission has expressed interest.
