Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow We are now looking ahead to the competition for the 3rd Annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. We encourage students, staff, and administrators at Talloires Network member institutions to nominate exceptional civic engagement initiatives between now and the December 15, 2010 deadline. The first two years of the prize have been tremendously successful, and we look forward to another outstanding pool of nominees this year. Learn more below and at our website>> I am also pleased to announce that the Talloires Network will convene a global conference of the leaders of member institutions on June 14-17, 2011 in Madrid, Spain. In partnership with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Banco Santander, and the Pearson Foundation, we will bring together our presidents, vice-chancellors, and rectors to strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education, and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development. The first global gathering of the Network’s leadership since our founding conference in Talloires in 2005, this will be a wonderful opportunity to build the relationships that are essential to sustaining the global movement for engaged universities. I look forward to sharing more information about the conference soon. Talloires Network Global Conference in Madrid, 14-17 June 2011 MacJannet Prize Call for Nominations Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, founding president of Aga Khan University and a member of the Talloires Network Steering Committee, has called for support for the victims of the floods that recently devastated Pakistan. In order to ensure donations go to accountable and effective projects, Dr. Kassim-Lakha suggests going through the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (www.pcp.org.pk). Last month I had the honor of attending the MacJannet Prize 2010 Workshop and Award Ceremony, held at the Tufts European Center in Talloires, France. Student and staff representatives from the winning programs spent several days exchanging ideas and discussing common concerns before formally receiving the Prize. The energy and commitment of the prize winners was tremendously encouraging, and gave me renewed confidence in the ability of passionate people like these to change their institutions and their communities for the better.
The Talloires Network is pleased to announce that the next global conference of member presidents will take place 14-17 June 2011 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. In order to celebrate the five year anniversary of the founding of the Talloires Network, we would like to again gather university leaders from around the world to discuss the next five years of the higher education civic engagement movement. We will gather presidents, vice chancellors and rectors from across the globe, representing the diversity of our 185 member universities from 58 countries. We will strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development. More details will be available soon.
The Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation are pleased to call for nominations for the third annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. The MacJannet Prize recognizes exceptional student civic engagement initiatives based in Talloires Network member universities around the world. One first prize ($5,000), two second prizes ($2,500 each), and five third-place prizes ($1,000 each) will be awarded. Winning programs will be profiled on the Talloires Network website and in communications that reach thousands of higher education contacts world-wide. Representatives from winning programs will also be hosted by the Talloires Network and MacJannet Foundation to receive their award in person at a special Award Ceremony. Nominations are due by 
On September 13-15, student and staff representatives of this year’s winning programs gathered in Talloires to exchange ideas and discuss challenges and opportunities in higher education community engagement. Some of the topics addressed included fundraising, sustainability, university policies, student learning outcomes, and communications. Participants then received their prizes in a formal Awards Ceremony attended by members of the Talloires Network secretariat, the MacJannet Foundation board, and local guests. Gateways is a refereed journal concerned with the practice and processes of community research and other forms of engagement. The Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) at the University of Brighton is working with Gateways to publish a special edition of the journal edited by Angie Hart and Simon Northmore. This special edition will have the theme of ‘Sustaining Community – University Partnerships’ and will appear in Spring 2011. Submissions are requested by midnight Friday 15 October (BST). 
The International Association of National Youth Service (IANYS) is hosting its 9th Global Conference in Alexandria, Egypt. This is an exciting opportunity for professionals in the field of youth development to come together to share information and current developments in the field with other policymakers, practitioners, and researchers; nurture connections for developing future projects; and discuss the emerging impact of service in the context of youth employability and youth service policy among other important themes. Conference participants will include professionals in the field of youth civic engagement from across the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region and around the world. 
Co-sponsored by the International Association for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement, the Center for Service and Learning at IUPUI, and Indiana Campus Compact, this conference is targeted to those interested in research on service-learning, campus-community partnerships, and civic outcomes of education. Presenters will include faculty and administrators in higher education, educators in K-12, and scholars and practitioners in educational policy and community development. Scholars and attendees from outside of the United States are encouraged to attend and present to advance mutual understanding of this work from multiple perspectives. 
The Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) is organizing this conference to respond to the challenges of sustainability as well as to identify ways for action. The Conference offers a collective work dynamic and active participation. With this methodology, the Conference will include parallel working sessions in two areas: the first will be a dynamic space for exchanging experiences and good practices to analyze how the world regions are advancing with the introduction of sustainability; the second will be a work space where participants will discuss and propose ways of action that contribute to the transformation of higher education. GUNI has issued a call for Good Practices for sessions in the first area. 
It is increasingly recognized that higher education institutions can make significant contributions to the economic, social, culture and environmental development of the cities and regions in which they are situated. However, many changes are required within universities in order for them to engage successfully with their surrounding communities. Equally, it is important for cities and regions to understand how they can take advantage of the higher education institutions in their areas to achieve common goals. The theme “Engaged Universities and Learning Cities-Regions” will enable in-depth analysis of the relationship between the university and society in a variety of national contexts. Papers for the conference will be accepted until 15 October. 
Humanity in Focus at the University of Hong Kong (China) was set up by a group of students who returned from a service learning project in Cambodia in summer 2006. Since summer 2006, HIF has developed from a group of 5 founders to an organization that has attracted youth from various universities, secondary schools and young professionals from various fields. In Cambodia, the Development Project Team of HIF works together with local community leaders to carry out development projects, which aim at empowering low-income families by providing them with the necessary materials, social support and skills. In Hong Kong, HIF educates and mobilizes local youth to discuss world poverty and humanitarian issues via the educational programs offered by its Youth Education Team. Each year, it organizes the Young Global Citizenship Program (YGCP) with financial support from Oxfam Hong Kong. The YGCP aims at training and empowering university students to become advocates for change via research, training and frontline services.
