With classes starting in many universities in the Global South, this is a busy time of year for Talloires Network members worldwide.
As each section of this month’s newsletter shows, our network is responding to the call to action from our 2014 Talloires Network Leaders Conference. This month, students from around the world are getting ready to leave their home countries and begin their service work as participants in our University Volunteers Program. In Uruguay, the Latin American Center for Service Learning (CLAYSS) has recently entered an agreement with the national government to promote service learning. Meanwhile, civic engagement leaders are getting ready to convene at conferences in Ireland, Arizona, and England. This month’s Leaders in the Civic Engagement series features people and activities at the University Kebangsaan Malaysia and the International Medical University.
At Tufts, we continue to forge strong working ties with our community partners throughout the Boston metropolitan area. Last week, I hosted our annual Presidential Symposium on Community Partnerships, which brings community leaders together with many of the Tufts faculty and students engaged in community research, teaching, and service to address public needs.
At the beginning of next month, Vice-Chair Cheryl de la Rey and I will lead one of the regularly scheduled meetings of members of the Talloires Network Steering Committee. The topics for discussion will include plans for the Network’s 10-year anniversary reception and our next global conference. A brief summary of the meeting will appear in next month’s newsletter.
I encourage you to let us know about work to advance civic engagement in your institution and region by emailing the TN secretariat.
Best wishes,
Tony Monaco

Many of us were saddened by the death of Professor David Watson early in February. Since then we have been reflecting on how profoundly he contributed to the civic engagement work of universities around the world and how much he influenced our individual efforts. We encourage you to join us in saluting David’s work and in strategizing about how to continue and build upon his pioneering leadership. We envision sharing publicly a mosaic of reflections and suggestions from people, institutions and networks across the globe. Send us a paragraph or several. Please send via email, with “David Watson” in the subject line, to TN executive director Rob Hollister.
