Partnership for Better Education
Coordinated through the School of Education, the Partnership for Better Education (PBE) assists Syracuse City School District students to graduate and successfully pursue higher education by providing new opportunities for quality instruction. PBE fosters innovative approaches to inclusive education for students in urban schools by emphasizing literacy through the arts, business and entrepreneurship, and science and technology. Read more>>
South Side Initiative
In 2005, SU facilitated the formation of an independent, community-based organization of emerging, neighborhood leaders from the South Side of Syracuse. The University collaborates with a community coalition on a number of projects, including a South Side Community Newspaper, improving access to the internet, and the Kuumba Project — an after-school arts academy to cultivate the artistic talent of South Side youth. Somali-Bantu Community Based Tutoring Program
The city of Syracuse has a large population of Somali Bantu refugees who, due to cultural and language barriers, have difficulty integrating into American society. In partnership with the Somali Bantu Community Organization of Syracuse, students from Syracuse tutor Somali children in English, math, and science every Saturday. Students work with 100 Somali children of various ages and English abilities. Learn more>>
