Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow Thanks to the collaborative efforts of our many stakeholders around the world, 2008 was a very productive year for the Talloires Network. This past year we grew in both membership and geographic diversity, gaining 30 new members in 13 different countries. As part of our strategy to work with students and recognize exceptional programs, we hosted 11 international students at the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) conference and launched the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Social (CLAYSS) became our partner in Latin America, helping to recruit members, disseminate information, and inform member institutions about opportunities. The Network also helped to organize the Tadamunn conference in Cairo, laying the foundation for a regional network in the Middle East and North Africa. All of our members contributed to our Global Project on Literacy. You can learn more about one of the latest projects below. This year, we hope to expand our outreach efforts while offering our members even more benefits, including increased partnership and funding opportunities. We wish to continue to foster dialogue about the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education, and welcome your feedback and contributions. Thank you again for your help in everything we accomplished in 2008. I look forward to our continued collaboration. Best Ways to Further a University’s Commitment to Civic Engagement: 1. Assess what the university is currently doing: Create a committee or task force to examine activities, and use our assessment tools to do further evaluation. 2. Engage everyone in the university and the wider community: Include students, faculty, staff, and community members in developing plans for increased engagement. 3. Learn what others are doing: Browse our website for ideas, and check back soon for a list of “Civic Engagement Experts” who can help you start or improve programs. 4. Choose an issue, like literacy, to focus resources and attention on. 5. Use toolkits and resources to help develop service-learning classes, partner with community organizations, and more. 6. Send us information about your new programs and gain feedback from Talloires Network staff as well as other members. MacJannet Prize nomination deadline extended! Residents of Syracuse, New York may now view student- and staff-created videos in public spaces, thanks to the Urban Video Project. "This is not only about engaging and thought-provoking public art," said Syracuse University Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor. "It’s about community and, in particular, what defines the Syracuse community: innovation and collaboration." 
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) issued this report, the first in a series on higher education worldwide. Among the topics addressed are "the impact of demographic changes on student enrolment, educational attainment, academic staff and policy choices" as well access to higher education, particularly for disabled and migrant students. 
Modeled off of the World Economic Forum, the World Universities Forum seeks to foster dialogue on the role of higher education in addressing large social challenges. Topics at this year’s conference include higher education in India and East Asia, development, and the contribution of the U.S. to the global systems of higher education. Brenda Gourley, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University and a Talloires Network Steering Committee member, will be one of the featured speakers.
